Pine Street Inn
One of the things we’re always most thankful for at Walden is our incredible member community, but in this season of giving, their efforts absolutely blew us away! While the Walden team was busy packing turkeys and preparing for the Thanksgiving holiday this year, we offered our members the option to purchase ground beef for the Pine Street Inn in Boston. Walden members rose to the challenge to cover Pine Street’s ground beef needs through the end of the year, and our team delivered the hefty 885 pounds the week before Thanksgiving.
The Pine Street Inn has been supporting Boston’s homeless and hungry population for decades, celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2019. They operate 4 shelters, 40 permanent housing locations, and serve close to 2,000 men and women daily. In addition to these services, the Pine Street Inn also offers workforce development and training in food service and housekeeping, street outreach, homeless court, and recovery services.
We have been incredibly fortunate to be able to continue to operate through this pandemic, and are aware that other institutions have encountered new challenges to fulfilling their meat needs. The Pine Street Inn has been dealing with an increasingly difficult environment on two fronts: both greater need in our community, as well as larger hurdles to acquiring high-quality meat amidst scarcity and price increases. Our region has recognized the need to help institutions like the Pine Street Inn with donations. Walden members stepped up to address the second challenge by donating local, quality protein to the guests the Pine Street Inn feeds.
Ground beef is a staple item in the Pine Street kitchen that is used regularly. The 885 pounds of ground beef from Walden, fueled by our members’ generosity, will cover their ground beef supply for the entire month of December! This translates to over 2,300 meals for those in need. Here at Walden, we’re so thankful to be able to contribute to this great organization in addition to our 1% for the hungry program, and grateful to our members for making it possible!
